BLM Plans Prescribed Burning in June
The Socorro Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management is planning to broadcast burn 3,000 acres on the west side of Ladrone Mountain and 2,700 acres in the Lower Taylor burn unit on Chupadera Mesa in Socorro County between May 31 and June 30, weather permitting. The Ladrone burn is located about 20 miles west of Bernardo and the Lower Taylor burn is located about 21 miles west-northwest of Carrizozo, immediately adjacent to US Highway 380.
Hospital To Conduct County-Wide Assessment
Starting in early June, Socorro General Hospital will conduct a needs assessment to identify health priorities of county residents and to determine what challenges people face in trying to access health services.

Drunk drivers in New Mexico are the target of a new initiative to make the state’s highways safer this summer.
Village Board Notes
Marshal’s Report
Marshal Larry Cearley submitted his department’s monthly report at the Village Board meeting May 17. In April the Marshal’s office wrote 56 traffic citations, 53 of which were for violation of local traffic laws, which netted the village $4,266 in fines. The remaining three traffic citations fell under state statutes.
Gila Wildfire Update
UPDATE
Gila National Forest reported that as of Wednesday afternoon, the Wallow Fire was contained. Mopping up will continue through Friday, May 27.

Magdalena High School Graduation 2011
Hundreds of family members, well-wishers and friends filled the Magdalena gymnasium Friday night, May 20, as members of the Class of 2011 bid farewell to high school. Twenty three seniors received their diplomas.
Ice Cream Truck Music A Nuisance?
One sign of warm weather is the appearance of the ice cream truck cruising the streets of Magdalena, but concern has been raised about the recorded tinkling music the truck makes.
Village Operating Budget Goes to DFA
The Magdalena Village Board approved the municipality’s annual budget during its meeting Tuesday, May 17.
Marshal Helps Return Of Teenage Runaway
An underage runaway has been located and returned home to her family as the result of a traffic stop Thursday, May 5, west of Magdalena on Highway 60 conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol and Magdalena Marshal Larry Cearley.
